Digital Methods of Studying the Culture of Memory, Rijeka (Croatia)

From 8th to 9th March 2017 a workshop Digital Methods of Studying the Culture of Memory was held in Rijeka where display methods and analysis of post-conflict responsibilities and society’s dealing with the past are presented in the light of contemporary social and humanistic theories, culture of memory, empirical data, and innovative methods of digital humanities. The lecturers on the workshop were Croatian computer linguist Nikola Ljubešić (Institute of Jožef Stefan in Ljubljana), Slobodan Beliga (University of Rijeka), and expert on digital humanities Daniele Guido (University of Luxembourg).

Sites of Suffering – the First phase of Holocaust in Serbia and Croatia, Belgrade (Serbia)

From 22nd to 24th February 2017 a three-day international seminar Sites of Suffering – the First phase of Holocaust in Serbia and Croatia was held in Belgrade. As part of the seminar five panels were presented: Historical Context, The Case of Serbia, Sites of Suffering in the Independent State of Croatia, Culture of Memory and Education, along with a documentary of executions in Leskovac on 11th December 1941, after which a discussion with the filmmaker was held.

The seminar was organised by the Union of Jewish Communities of Serbia, Centre for Research and Education about the Holocaust, and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka.

Florian Bieber ”Crisis of Democracy in Southeastern Europe”, Rijeka (Croatia)

On Thursday 10th November 2016 a guest lecture of Ph.D. Florian Bieber (University of Graz) was held on Crisis of Democracy in Southeastern Europe. The next day, Friday 11th, a seminar was held in premises of the Department of Cultural Studies under the guidance of the guest lecturer in cooperation with researchers from the Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS). Among the rest of the participants, members of the FRAMNAT project also attended this seminar under the leadership of Ph.D. Vjeran Pavlaković from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka.

Building the Nation and Collective Identity; ”Restless Nationalism”, Rijeka (Croatia)

On 5th October 2016 a workshop Restless Nationalism was held in Rijeka, within which a guest lecture on Ideology of Rightist Populist Utopias was held by the former Minister of Interior and Foreign Affairs of Macedonia, Ljubomir Frčkoski. As part of the workshop Renato Stanković, a PhD student of Contemporary Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, also presented his topic Building the Nation and Collective Identity as the representative of the FRAMNAT project.

Collective memory; ”4th Centre for Advanced Studies SEE International Conference”, Rijeka (Croatia)

From 26th to 28th May 2016 a 4th CAS SEE International Conference was held in Rijeka, on topic Institutions in Action: The Nature and the Role of Institutions in the Real World. Over 70 scientists and researchers participated whose field of work is studying the significance of impact of political, social, economic, and legal institutions on a life of an individual, with special emphasis on circumstances in the midst of ideological struggles in which those institutions actively participate. Amon the participants was Renato Stanković, a PhD student of Contemporary Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and member of the FRAMNAT project.

The conference was organised by the Centre for Advanced Studies–Southeast Europe, University of Rijeka, LabOnt–Department of Philosophy, University of Torino in cooperation with the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade.

Researching the Bleiburg Commemoration: Epistemology, Ontology and the Future; ”Bleiburg and beyond. Transnational approaches towards memory politics and commemorative practices”, Graz (Austria)

On 13th May 2016 a workshop Bleiburg & Beyond. Transnational Approaches Towards Memory Politics and Commemorative Practices was held in Graz. A purpose was to present first results of the joint research project Transnational Cultures of Bleiburg Remembrance in Austria and Croatia by the Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz and the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Rijeka.

Altogether, 11 of scientists and researchers participated on the workshop among whom were members of the project FRAMNAT, under the leadership of Ph.D. Vjeran Pavlaković from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, with lectures Researching the Bleiburg Commemoration: Methodologies, Sources, Controversies and The Bleiburg Commemoration in Croatian Parliamentary Decisions.

”Digital Humanities Workshop”, Rijeka (Hrvatska)

The workshop on Digital Humanities was held in the lecture hall of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, from March 17th to March 18th 2016. Twenty-five people participated in the workshop and discussed following topics ”A short introduction to Digital Humanities”, ”Digital Humanities and the role od text”, ”Introduction to Data Visualization: trends, tools and practice”, ”FRAMNAT data interpretation” and ”Future perspectives of Digital Humanities”.

”Methodology in Social Sciences” workshop, Rijeka (Croatia)

On the 2nd of December 2015, a ”Methodology in Social Sciences” workshop was held at the Cultural Studies Department (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences). About 20 people participated in the workshop, and the topics were: research design, quantitative methods, interviews, opservations, focus groups, qualitative methods, ethics. The leaders of the workshop were Ivan Sokolić, Ana Ljubojević and Benedikt Perak.
